TOM FINN at the Courtyard Gallery, Middleton:
An appreciation by Marilyne Monpellier

As a very active member of Conna Community Council, Tom Finn is well known for his passion in history. For many years Tom has contributed to major researches and publications on the History of our locality. He is also a founder member of Conna Indoor Bowling Club and a great sports enthusiast.

Tom also enjoys a grand popularity for his artistic abilities: He specialises in painting portraits in oils.
He discovered his creative gift a few years ago while taking Art classes with very talented Mrs Mary Gough.
His portrait of Very reverend Dean Gould made sensation at Conna Art& Craft Fair last November.
Tom also tries his talent in painting sceneries, such as Aghern Bridge and Conna Village which proved to be very popular. He bases his work on photographs and reproduces them with a personal hint and a lot of affection.

As his name and reputation was becoming resonant in the Blackwater valley, Tom decided to take the content of his "studio" from Carrigeen to The Courtyard Gallery in Middleton, from the 16th of February until the 1st March 2006.
Many people from the locality went to see the exhibition and found it striking.

As I went to the exhibition with members of Conna Social Centre, I collected impressions and delights before Tom's paintings. The utmost favourites were the paintings of "Aghern Bridge"- which combines the colours of nature with a spiritual romanticism- and "Conna Village" and "Conna Church", with its well detailed objects and predominant sunny colours contrasting with nostalgic hints of pink and mauve.

Personally, I envied Tom's skills when I set eyes on " Pastoral Scene", a complex work combining minimalism and intricate details with a touch of impressionism, all well balanced and harmoniously set. My mind wandered in front of "City Night", and its simple but intelligent strokes of colours and lights depicting Cork City. "Auto-portrait" was also remarkable by its truthfulness and its humour.

The subjects of his paintings were just as much significant as they were diverse and always reproduced with great care, dedication and passion.. Our little group of visitors staid complacent at having seen Tom's work and proud of counting him amongst the few renowned artists from Conna. We congratulate him on joining the local artists that are forming the promising and jubilant "Conna Movement". And we urge everyone to go and admire his work.
Tom also works on commission for portraits done in oils. He can be contacted at 058/56704 or E-mail tomfinn_ie@yahoo.com
Thank you Tom for your impressive exhibition.
