Curraglass N.S. Spring News Letter 2006

At the mid-term break we all had a well deserved rest, but now its back to the grindstone! We are all looking forward to the Spring term, let s hope it s as exciting and action packed as the last. We have just completed six weeks of P.E. in Conna Sports Complex. Our activities included soccer, basketball, tennis, and many other sports and games. With our P.E over we are continuing our fitness regime with our dancing lessons with Trish Leahy, and near the end of the term, Larry will be teaching us folk-dancing.
The recent visits of soccer player Liam Kearney and hurler Timmy McCarthy really promoted a healthy lifestyle for the children. We are currently enjoying learning music with our music teacher Mrs. Cullinane. We are slashing our trash in the school, as the students and staff are being encouraged to recycle their paper and plastic waste. Our wormery continues to be a big success; both Ms. Grant s and Mrs. Fouhy-Barry s pupils planted bulbs using our home produced compost! You can see the results in the wonderful crocuses and daffodils in the window-boxes as you pass the school.

On St. Valentine s Day Angela sold friendship bracelets in aid of Amnesty International s Control Arms Campaign, the total sold was 80. New library books have recently been bought; we are also utilising the Cork County Library van. Thanks to local librarian Angela Davis and her colleagues for all their help.
We had such a successful healthy eating day last term that we featured in the Southern Health Board s Spring 2006 Sl inte magazine A non-uniform day will be held on the 26th of April in aid of the Chernobyl Children s Project. Art is a major subject this term, with Mrs. Barry s room exploring the Renaissance. We used the internet to find out all about Leonardo de Vinci and his contemporaries. Ms. Grant s classes are expressing themselves freely in art with a focus on texture and colour.
Mrs. Barry s room have recently done an art project on Spring, with poems and posters galore! Some of the boys did a rap/slash poem with a Spring theme. Sixth class children are undertaking their entrance exams for their chosen secondary schools. We wish them the best of luck!
We are one step closer to having satellite broadband, thanks to the efforts of the National Centre for Technology in Education. To view our work, go on our brilliant website at http://homepage.eircom.net/~curraglassns We are now able to enjoy our new pitch, as the days are getting better and the ground is not too soft! G.A.A training is starting up again and we give our best wishes to the St. Catherine s team. Miss O Mahoney teaches us science and Ms. Grant teaches us I.T. while Mrs. Barry enjoys Our News in the junior room on Thursday mornings.

We love the variety and the experiments. Last week we did a speed test in typing, and we made graphs in Microsoft Excel, while we investigated prisms in science. Carol O Leary, Richard Condon and Melanie O Connor each wrote letters to Liam Kearney, Pat Shortt and Criana Buckley respectively; they all received generous replies. We had an in-service on the Monday the 20th of March. The school was closed to all pupils but not the teachers yes! Friday the 17th of March was be a day off for St. Patrick s day!

We welcome our new parish priest, Fr. Billy O Donovan who is also manager of our school. Ta f ailte romhat Fr. Billy. Our second class children were busy preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (First Confession) in March. We would like to wish our friend Bryan a speedy recovery. The Easter holidays will be from April the 10th to the 21st inclusive. School will resume on Monday April 24th. This

This newsletter was written by the children in 5th and 6th class and edited by staff of Curraglass N.S. Spring When spring arrives the trees sprout leaves And out come the bees. I conceive to believe that the leaves crack And the hurlies smack. The hunting s over as we leg it over The mountains of clover. The trees are budding and the roads are No longer flooding. Out comes the foal, and the mares Begin to roll. We welcome the lambs as we turn off our lamps Because the days are getting longer and we are getting stronger Goodbye for now my best friends Until Spring ends.
