Conna School News
Welcome back to Conna School to all our pupils and staff after the Christmas break. A special welcome to our new pupil from Poland , Robert Mazur .
To start off the new year we invited storyteller and author , Ian Jackson to our school . Ian entertained the pupils with his funny stories and inspired them to create their own stories . We are currently participating in the programme for Health Promoting Schools. We wish to compliment all parents on their support for the healthy lunches policy at school and encourage you to continue your efforts . We are also promoting more activity during break time and the marking of the school yard , while we had envisaged that this would now be complete, will hopefully be a reality in the near future .
We are also involving the children in the programme set out by the Irish Heart Foundation , which involves activity to music . The Scor na bPaist Figure dancers representing St.Catherine's GAA club and Conna School contested a County Semi-Final in Watergrasshill .Unfortunately victory did not come their way , however they did us proud. The members of the team from Conna School were Maeve Galvin , Mary Galvin , Rachel Spillane and Emma Spillane . Well done to the past pupils of Conna School who contested the Sco r na nog Munster Final in ballad singing recently, they were Jill Hurley, James Moroney , Patricia Moroney, Marie Barry and Stephen Mills . A special word of congratulations to Patricia Moroney who was a member in a group of singers from Loreto Secondary school who won an All Ireland title in the Read ir Competition recently .
National Tree week provided a focus for discussion on trees . Among the activities was information and fund-raising for the
Moringa Tree Project . This is a rare tree , which can be cultivated to provide leaves that are both nutritious and medically beneficial .
Preparation for the Sciath na Scol Competition is currently under way . An issue concerning safety at the school gate has been raised . We would ask that parents/guardians refrain from pulling in or parking directly in front of the school gate at any time before or after school . This area must be free at all times to facilitate the safe movement of pupils , parents , staff and visitors entering and exiting the school grounds at peak times .
First Communion Day for the pupils of Conna School is on Saturday, 13th of May in St.Catherine's Church ,Conna . First Penance took place on Tuesday 21st March .There are ten children from our school for the sacraments this year . The date for Cork City Sports has been announced . It is on Wednesday , 14th of June . Plans are currently underway for organizing the school team. A seminar on Drug Abuse has been held at the school . It consisted of two separate nights . We would like to thank Liam Doocey and the Parents Association for their efforts in organizing this event . We wish to express our sympathy to our colleague and teacher Ms.Alison MacMahon on the death of her brother , Niall . May he rest in Peace. Finally as we look forward to Easter and the third and final school term , sixth class pupils will be making plans for the new term in secondary school in September . We wish them well .
