A Winter of Great Sadness

So many people have died over the past autumn and winter in the parish. We went from funeral to funeral wondering when would it all end. Many young people who should have lived for a long number of years were buried by people who stood by in sadness as they searched for reasons as to why. There were no reasons, only sadness.
Those who have left us we pray will look upon and guide all who grieve for them.
We remember their lives as members of this community and we are all the poorer for their passing.
To their grieving relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Social Centre

The committee of the centre decided to apply for planning permission to use the upper floor for storage, prayer room, historical archive room, meeting room, and shower / toilets.
Subject to planning approval we will decide about going further with the project. We believe that it will be worth doing subject to grant availability etc.
The Thursday lunches are proving very successful. We are now sending the bus around to different areas to collect people who would not be able to come for lunch because of the unavailability of transport. A huge word of thanks to all who help out with the lunches
The Mothers Day evening dinner and entertainment was a delightful event attended by over eighty people. Kevin Walsh delivered an after dinner talk which was lauded by all as excellent and hugely entertaining. The Bride Valley Boys provided the music which as always was greatly appreciated.
The Social Mornings held monthly by Community Care are a great success, well done to all involved.

The Shanakill Road
There are many nice walks around this parish which are well used by people as a means of physical exercise and mental relaxation.
It would be difficult to find as peaceful and pleasant a route as the Shanakill road running at right angles from the Tallow -Conna road to the village of Ballynoe.
Here one can still walk without the risk of being run over by the ever increasing number of speeding vehicles on the main roads.
However, the scenic road with its evergreens sloping down to the Shanakill river and its marshy acres adjacent to the Ballynoe-Conna road has become a dumping ground for people who think so little of their environment that they pollute the area with rotting domestic rubbish and disused electrical appliances.
The road is now fair game for polluters and they know it, night after night they dispose of rubbish with impunity and this will continue while environmental litter louts with the foresight of an imbecile ruin our countryside to save a few Euro.
It is so sad to imagine the mindset of people who do this!
We are trying to clean up the environment to ensure that there will be one habitable for future generations and this is what is happening.

Bring Site in Conna

The cardboard and plastic recycling facility will be removed before the Summer in common with the stated policy of Cork County Council's Sanitary Department. The glass and other recycling containers will remain.

Conna & District Flower & Garden Club

Congratulations to the Conna & District Flower & Garden Club on their 25th Anniversary. What a great club to have given so much joy to its members and of course to all of us over the years.
Its members were never shy when we needed funds raised to support the Complex and various events. We wish them continued success over the coming years and note on this their anniversary the contribution they have made to the parish.

Geraldine O' Leary

Our sincerest congratulations to Geraldine on her appointment to the post of National Publications Officer with AOIFA the National Association of Floral Artists. Geraldine is part of a six person team and for the next two years, they will be responsible for arranging National floral festivals.
University College Cork will host the Festival of Flowers in June, and there are many other events to concentrate on after that.
This is obviously going to be a demanding position and one that will need a great deal of time and organisational expertise. Geraldine will not be found wanting as her years of experience will stand her in good stead.
New Water Source
We have learned recently that the County Council have found a good source of water for the village of Conna. This is welcome news, the supply should be here for the Summer. We will wait and see what the quality is like before commenting further.

Expansion of Sewage Treatment Plant
This plant has been expanded to cope with the increase in the number of houses being built in the village
